About hckrnews
hckrnews presents Hacker News stories in alternative formats, offering different ways to browse and discover content.
Core Features
Timeline View
The default view organizes stories chronologically, grouped by the day they were posted (based on UTC). It focuses on showing the top stories for each day as they happened.
- Daily Grouping: Stories are clearly separated under date headers (e.g., "Today", "Monday, April 21").
- Top Filters: Use the settings panel to show the Top 10, 20, 50, or 100 stories per day, based on your chosen sorting metric (Points or Comments).
- Infinite Scroll / Load More: Scroll down to automatically load older days. If content is short, a "Load More" button appears.
- Seen Story Highlighting: Newly loaded stories you haven't seen before are subtly marked with a left border.
Aggregate View
This view consolidates the top stories over a selected time period, allowing you to see the most significant posts from a day, week, month, year, or a custom date range.
- Period Selection: Easily switch between viewing top stories from the last Day, Week, Month, or Year.
- Custom Date Range: Select the "Range" option to activate an interactive slider, allowing you to define a specific start and end date within the last 12 months.
- Sorting: Choose to rank aggregated stories by either Points or Comments via the settings panel.
- Load More: Click the "Load More" button to fetch the next batch of stories for the selected period.
Layout Options
Customize how stories are displayed to suit your screen size and preference.
- Classic Layout: A traditional single-column list, similar to the standard Hacker News interface.
- Dense Layout: A multi-column, masonry-style layout that adapts the number of columns based on screen width. This mode also presents story points and comments more prominently next to the title.
Content Filters
Refine the stories shown based on specific criteria using filter pills in the settings.
- Small Web: Filters for content primarily from the non-commercial, independent web (personal blogs, hobby sites, etc.), based on Kagi's Small Web initiative.
- Show HN: Filters to show only posts that have been tagged as "Show HN" on Hacker News.
Settings Panel
All viewing options and filters are conveniently located in a collapsible settings panel at the top of the page. Click "Hide" to collapse it and see a summary of your current settings.
